This, coupled with definition legal successor Union, suggesting continuity and history uninterrupted statehood, enabled range rivaling understandings how define “nation.” Focusing top-down official nation-building, this article examines how, against backdrop shifting political contexts, structural constraints, popular attitudes, Kremlin gradually revised its understanding what constitutes “Russian nation.” Four models post-Soviet Russian are identified – ethnic, multi-national, civic, imperial. Over time, correlation forces among these shifted. The concludes that, despite some claims an ethno-nationalist turn after 2014, still employs nationalism instrumentally: National undoubtedly become more russkii- centered, but, at same keeps “Russianness” intentionally vague, blurring boundaries “nation” “civilization.”
